Short Course Number: PD570
CEU's: 1.5
Number of days: 2
|
This is a fundamental to intermediate presentation designed for personnel who need to use geometric tolerancing in an industrial environment. It is presented with computer color animated graphics, video clips and plastic models which allow the students to clearly understand the concepts. There is extensive discussion on the use of the datum reference frame and the application of the feature and datum MMC, LMC and RFS modifiers. The course is loaded with student workshop problems so the students can test their new skills. The course provides "practical world" approach to the subject, with the use of wood/plastic models that simulate parts, gages and inspection equipment. The basic philosophies of how, when, and where to apply geometrics along with common sense tips for producing quality parts are included. Discussion also covers the application of geometric tolerancing to design, manufacturing and quality control.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN Upon completion of this course, participants will have a solid foundation in the fundamentals of geometric tolerancing. The course includes emphasis on all rules, measurement theory, datum reference frames, form, orientation, profile, positional tolerancing and MMC, LMC & RFS concepts. The course is delivered per the ASME Y14.5M, 1994 and ISO standard. All participants receive a copy of the Geometric Tolerancing Workbook and Geometric Tolerancing Pocket Guide. TARGET AUDIENCE Anyone who needs to read an engineering drawing. This course is for engineers, designers, drafters, quality, procurement, tooling, production, purchasing manufacturing, CAD, inspection and shop personnel.
SPECIAL NOTE: Participants may bring drawings to class for discussion. |

Al Neumann
Is President/Director of Technical Consultants Inc (TCI) which is located in Longboat, Key, Fl. TCI is a training and consulting firm specializing in geometric tolerancing. Al Neumann, President and Director, is a graduate of Central Michigan University. He has worked in a variety of engineering and manufacturing firms related to automotive as well as the defense industry. His exposure and enlightenment to geometric tolerancing began in 1965 working with Chrysler Institute, Chrysler Corporation. There, he provided engineering and manufacturing related training programs as well as geometric tolerancing training to various Chrysler Corp facilities along with its many suppliers. He has been a member on the ASME Y14.5, Dimensioning and Tolerancing subcommittee for the past 22 years. He currently serves as section sponsor on the Datums, section 4 group. Mr. Neumann is also a member on the ASME Y14.5.1 subcommittee on Mathematical Definitions of Dimensioning and Tolerancing. He has served as chairman on the US Technical Activities Group to ISO on Dimensioning and Tolerancing and Mathematical Definitions. He has served on national and international standards committees for the past 25 years. Mr. Neumann is a senior member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
Scott Neumann
Scott is a senior partner in Technical Consultants Inc. He graduated from University of Florida in Mechanical Engineering. He specializes in geometric tolerancing and tolerance stack-up and analysis.
Scott is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and is senior level ASME certified as a geometric tolerancing professional. He also represents the USA in the International Standards Organization, ISO TC10 committee. He regularly attends the USA, ASME Y14.5M subcommittee on dimensioning and tolerancing.
Scott has presented many geometric tolerancing training programs to engineering, manufacturing and quality personnel at major corporations in the USA and around the world. He is a major contributor to the Geometric Tolerancing Applications and Stacks workbook and the Geometric Tolerancing Stacks and Analysis workbook.

Course Outline:
• Introduction to Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing – Geometric characteristic symbols; limits of size, rules, terms and definitions; features with and without size, MMC, RFS, LMC and virtual condition; measurement principles.
• Datums - Datum selection, establishing datum reference frames; effect of datum feature modifiers, MMC, LMC and RFS; datum shift; application and verification exercises.
• Form Tolerances – Flatness, straightness, circularity, and cylindricity;
• Orientation Tolerances – Perpendicularity, angularity and parallelism; orientation as a refinement of other geometric controls; application and verification principles.
• Profile Tolerances – Profile of a surface and line; using profile to control size, form, orientation and location; bilateral and unilateral tolerances; single segment and composite profile tolerancing; application and verification principles.
• Runout Tolerances – Circular and total runout; relationship to form, orientation and other coaxial controls; multiple datum features; application and verification principles.
• Location Tolerances – Position, concentricity, and symmetry; feature tolerances modified at MMC, RFS, and LMC; floating and fixed fastener calculations; projected tolerance zone; single segment and composite tolerancing; position boundary; functional gaging, paper gaging, and CMM data analysis; application and verification principles.
