World-class companies use the tools and processes taught in this course to guide the design and development of high-quality products.  Some of the topics of special interest are - new product creation strategy and process, creative design techniques, principles of design for manufacturing, design for assembly/disassembly, optimization, and ergonomics. In view of the recent development in lean manufacturing and information technology, emphasis on optimization tools, FMEA and Root Cause Analysis are important. A good product design course should familiarize the product designers and students with the concepts, techniques and tools of new product design and development. The course should relate the topics of creating a self-directed product team, following the steps of creative design methodology, learning the tools of production process, identifying the integrated issues of design and production and finally managing product innovation.Some of the topics of special interest are - new product creation strategy and process, creative design techniques, principles of design for manufacturing, design for assembly/disassembly, optimization, and ergonomics.

Target Audience- Engineering professionals involved in the product design process

Course Objectives

· The objective of this course is to master the theory and application of design for manufacturing principles to any new product launch.
· Familiarize the participants with the concepts, techniques and tools of new product design and development.
· Ability to use tools Design for Assembly/Disassembly and DFX that help identify the weaknesses in the current design and give suggestions on how to refine the design in all aspects.
· Have an understanding of the methods for optimizing the design and also use tools like FMEA and Root Cause Analysis to identify the potential failure modes and effects of the system
